An exhibition of a selection of J P Gibson’s photographic images of Hexham and its hinterlands taken throughout the reign of Queen Victoria presented by the Hexham High Street Heritage Action Zone’s (HSHAZ).
The J P Gibson images are reproduced with the generous permission of the Gibson family and have been curated by the HSHAZ Community Engagement Officer with the invaluable support of Mark Benjamin of the Hexham Local History Society (HLHS). The images were sourced from the collection, which holds around 17,000 images, and reproduced on the display boards by Northumberland Archives.
The Hexham High Street Heritage Action Zone is part of a nationwide initiative to secure lasting improvements to historic high streets, funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and run by Historic England.
Northumberland County Council (NCC) and partners, Hexham Town Council and Hexham Community Partnership developed a successful submission to the national programme to deliver a £2.4m programme of improvements to boost the town centre and enhance the Conservation Area, focusing interventions on the target corridor of Priestpopple, Battle Hill and Cattle Market. Hexham’s HSHAZ commenced in October 2020 and runs until March 2024.
The HSHAZ includes: A Building Grants Scheme to improve and repurpose buildings in the target area. Public Realm improvements. A Community Engagement Programme, of which this exhibition is part, aiming to maximise appreciation of the culture and heritage of the town. A Cultural Programme, run by the Hexham Cultural Network, which launched with Animating Hexham and will feature a wide variety of cultural activity throughout 2022/23.
